Characters
The first part of the Tale of Woven Water opens with main characters Layla Bellmere and Oran Hayle. Through the first part we meet Elayne and Tordon Witkatch, Tristan Roford and Samme Tarre.
Layla Bellmere is the oldest of five Bellmere siblings. Tiron, Halla, Catlyn, and Redd. She was broken and abused as a child. Harsh training and mental preparation made her hard and unforgiving. From the age of five she was trained in military strategy and personal combat. Her father Charlen the Red would hit her often to remind her that no one would ever go easy on her. Broken bones and bruises cursed Layla’s young life and she constantly pushed herself to become faster and stronger. At the age of ten she fought in the Ring of Black which was a secret underground fighting cult, that used the ancient tunnels that run throughout Lune, which pitted two contestants against each other until one could no longer fight. Layla snuck out of the castle one night to join these fights and the only weapons she could find that were not locked up was her father’s warhammer. Layla was an exceptional fighter and she managed to kill three of the best fighters belonging to the Ring of Black. As she grew older her prowess in battle only increased. At fourteen she was shipped off to Daylain where she met a younger Tobin Witkatch and fought in the War of the Rains. This was a massive war between the noble houses of Daylain who were fighting over inheritance rights of the trade routes with Ettor and Vovenold. Layla would prove her excellence as a military commander when she won the battle of Latpool with only three thousand troops against her enemy’s eight thousand. She individually killed almost forty-fifty enemy troops including slaying Fedanilla the Golden. She was awarded the Daylain pin of Military Excellence, the brooch of Gano, and the tattoo of the Royal Guard. After losing all friendship with Tobin due to his betrayal of the Royal Daylain family and siding with the usurpers, Layla was defeated terribly at the battle of Valcain. Thousands fell as Tobin’s men joined the usurpers and turned on Layla’s army. Layla once again proved her almost divine will to live as she fought through the battlefield to the Royal Tent and managed to save the princess of Daylain. The two then escaped by disguising themselves as peasants and Layla brought her to her ship which she had hid on the coast and she sailed the princess to Ettor to a secluded temple of the Old Gods. Here she left the princess and the two never saw each other again. She then returned to Vovenold at the age of 27. She had been in Daylain for almost thirteen years. Bred and born with violence in her life Layla returns a scarred and hardened veteran of countless battles yet determined to start a new life.
